Shadowgrounds Survivor is coming to Linux

For several months, LGP has been working behind the scenes with Finnish developer Igios to bring you Shadowgrounds Survivor, sequel to the award-winning Shadowgrounds.

Shadowgrounds is a third person sci-fi RPG shooter set in the late 21st century. An alien race has devastated the colony on Ganymede, leaving few survivors. The story picks up a few hours after the attack, with you playing a lone survivor struggling to survive.

The game is the first commercial game on Linux to take advantage of Nvidia’s PhysX engine, giving the ability to do the high intensity number crunching needed for physics calculations on the graphics card, leading to a highly realistic and deformable environment.

The game has been in internal testing at LGP for several months and is now considered  ready for beta. We will be making the announcement on our main website on how to apply for the Beta within the next few hours.

Shadowgrounds Survivor was originally developed for Windows by FrozenByte, a Helsinki based development company.

  1. at last – physx arriving on linux games! good news!

the question is if hardware accelaration via CUDA on nVIDIA cards is available on Linux? Or is the physx code only executed by the CPU even on computers with modern nVIDIA cards?

  2. Jesper says:

Yes, CUDA is available on Linux, you can download the CUDA SDK for Linux from nVidia’s website.

  3. Patrick says:

This is very cool news. This looks like a very nice game. I’m going to buy at least two editions: one for myself and one for a friend of mine.

Support for PhysX is also very nice. I didn’t suspect to see PhysX in a Linux game so quick. Very good job, LGP. Thank you for doing such a great job.

    One question:
How about the first Shadowgrounds game? I found this Finnish article:
    http://sektori.com/uutinen/suomalainen-shadowgrounds-survivor/8092/
According to a Google translation, it says the first Shadowgrounds is also coming to Linux. Will this game also be published by LGP? It’d be very cool to have this game bundled with Shadowground: Survivor. Just like Sacred: Gold will be a bundle of Sacred and Sacred: Underworld.

  4. michael says:

We have no plans on the first game at this time, I am afraid. If the opportunity arises, well, we’ll see {:-)

  5. Eric says:

    Hi,

That’s great, I’m definitely interested (I also bought Postal2, X2, X3 and Majestic, which were fantastic ports).

However, I had a question regarding the pricing of these games, especially concerning UK residents. I have contacted your reseller Tuxgames (which I know has strong ties with LGP, and probably the only reseller of LGP games in the UK) twice, but did not get any answer. I am interested in Sacred Gold, that has on LGP website a RRP of £27. But Tuxgames only sells it in US dollars: $50, which means in reality £38, thanks to a weak pound. Unfortunately, I cannot afford the game at that price. £27 is ok, up to £30 probably, but not in the £40 range. Similarly, I doubt that Shadowgrounds, which is announced at £22, will be available at this price. Linux gaming used to be expensive, but now it has become unaffordable!

I would like to know the opinion of Michael regarding this problem, and if it is possible to go back to more reasonable grounds, especially considering LGP and Tuxgames are UK companies, and therefore should not take advantage of a unfavorable change rate for the UK customers.

    Regards.

  6. michael says:

Yes we are aware this is an issue. Tux Games usually uses somewhere around 1.6 as its exchange rate. With the rate as it is now, thats a bit of a disadvantage, but on the other hand for the last 4 years at 2.0, it was an advantage.

On the other hand it is also still possible to order directly from LGP if you wish.

  7. Eric says:

Thanks a lot for this answer Michael. But I was not aware we could order directly from LGP!! I will definitely preorder Sacred and Shadowground (when it is available), because I know that will support the development of these titles. But how to do so? Have you got an order page?

  8. Eric says:

    Hi again!

I have finally found your order page, in my account section. However, it is not possible to preorder games, as you can do with Tuxgames. Would that be possible to add this feature? It already allowed me to participate to the beta program of X3, and I’d like to do the same with Sacred/Shadowgrounds.

    Regards.

  9. michael says:

Actually this is deliberate as most of our resellers offer this, and we don’t, so that they can get some good preorder sales in, as a way to help them sell games.

This, I agree, is a problem for people wanting to order to access the beta through us, but unfortunately we have made this promise to our resellers and must stick to it.

  10. Eric says:

Well, thanks Michael, but I am afraid I’ll have to wait until Sacred is released or when the pound goes up! Actually that also depends on Tuxgames. If they were selling in pounds, at the RRP price, I would definitely buy it, but now it is too much! You may want to have a word with them. Also, are there any other UK resellers? Linuxemporium do not seem to sell LGP titles anymore, despite being in the reseller list.

  11. xav1r says:

This is great news. So will there be a invite-only or similar beta testing for shadowgrounds survivor? I’d love to betatest this. :)

  12. Jaroslav Smid says:

Will Linux port of the game be free for those who already bought version for Windows on Steam? If not, I’m gonna cry, because I’m not willing to buy it twice.

  13. Jaroslav Smid says:

And one more thing: is there going to be 64bit version of the game? If not, I wouldn’t buy it even if I were willing to buy it twice.

  14. michael says:

xav1r: Yes there will be a beta test, it will be announced in the next couple of days.

Jaroslav: No, because unfortunately, the company that ported the game from Windows to Linux games no share of the money from the Windows sales, and they cant be expected to work for free.
As for 64 bit version, the game is natively 32 bit on Windows and Linux, but will work just fine on 64 bit Linux.

  15. Eduardo says:

    Excellent!
Do you have resellers in Brazil? I don’t buy games for Windows but I’d like to buy Linux games. The problem is that I never find them at Brazilian software stores.
Anyway, I intend to buy LGP games whenever it is possible.

  16. fluxi says:

will there be multiplayer support in linux? i’m not sure but i read somewhere that the windows version has a coop-mode which is controlled via two gamepads or two mice+keyboards.

with multiplayer i don’t mean internet or lan play.

  17. skoruppa says:

“The game is the first commercial game on Linux to take advantage of Nvidia’s PhysX engine” – and what about Savage 2? Comercia, for linux and it use PhysX.

  18. michael says:

Unfortunately, I don’t believe it is using physx on Linux. An investigation on a test system that has no libPhysX installations, the game still runs, and there is no local copy of these libraries in the install.
Im afraid that physx for savage2 is windows only. I may be wrong, but, Im not sure how.

  19. Hossie says:

So, where is it? Shouldn’t it be released on 30 March?

  20. igre says:

    wow, awesome one

  21. Okey says:

    Thank you very good

  22. medyum says:

    • kayman says:

Fortunatelly, for me, tuxgames is cheaper then LGP shop because of $-> euro has better conversion then GBP->euro.
Why you cannot buy on LGP shop?
And Sacred is already released, I am playing it two months now :)
