Give a name to the new addition to LGP

Just under two weeks ago, the LGP office had a visitor.

kitten

It seems that she has adopted us, as she spends pretty much all of her time in the office, and is a constant disruption to work. At every opportunity she loves to sit on keyboards – especially when typing is going on, and she is very insistent when she wants some attention, as you can see from the picture above when she decided to sit on my keyboard and demand my time.

I decided we weren’t going to name her until she had stuck around for a couple of weeks, afterall, she could have just wandered off again. But it does seem she is here to stay.

So, we have a few ideas for names, but we can’t quite decide which, if any, of them are right. So, I thought, lets get a bit of community involvement, and set up a name poll.

So, add your votes below, and if you have suggestions for a better name that isn’t on the list, add a comment, an if we like it, we’ll add it to the poll! You can choose multiple answers if you like.

EDIT Oct 8th: Well, the poll has been going for just under 4 days now, and you can’t leave a cat without a name for too long! We will now be taking the top three, Qwerty, Switch, and CatMonster, and over the next week we’ll see which one seems to fit her best. The one that works best, we’ll name her, and update this post with the final result! Thanks everyone for your contribution, and I’m sorry I never got around to adding some of the new suggestions to the poll!

EDIT Oct 16th: After a weeks trialling, one name is clearly a winner based on her personality and attitude and what comes naturally when talking to her. CatMonster! It is great as an all-purpose name that can have its start changed, so when she meows a lot she is a NoiseMonster, when she’s asleep she can sometimes be the SnoozeMonster. And when she sneezed a while ago she was the SnotMonster. All in all, CatMonster wins!

So, what should we call the LGP cat?

A bit of explanation as to some of these names…

  • CatMonster: A bit like KateMonster from Avenue Q
  • Ceefer: Ceefer Cat. Say it aloud, you’ll get it.
  • Natasha: The whole Boris and Natasha thing, and she likes eating spiders (Boris the spider). Its a bit convoluted, but made the list
  • Piper: She’s a mouser. So from the Pied Piper. Also has a nice link in to the ‘Charmed’ TV show
  • Quark: She loves having her ears scratched, so a Ferengi name was needed!
  • Qwerty: She is a keyboard cat. Obvious really
  • Splodge: I mentioned the new addition to my mother on the phone a week or so ago, and she insisted this be the new name.
  • Spot: Another Star Trek reference. Data’s cat.
  • Switch: Her favourite place to sit is on the office gigabit switch. Its warm and by the window. Also a Matrix tie-in
  • UsrBin: /usr/bin/cat. OK so cat is usually in /bin but you can’t call a cat just Bin
cat11 cat2

That cat is awesomely adorable. I voted Usrbin, but I like the name just Bin. Did she just show up at the office one day, and you decided to adopt her, or what?

Also, you could call her Tux, but that is a tad generic.

  2. blindcoder says:

Even though I’m more a dog person, that cat is just too cool ;-)

Still, if you keep her (him? have you checked?), you should really have a vet do a chekup. Having taken up stray dogs from time to time I can only recommend that.

  3. Edd says:

We had a coop named Bin. It a Chinese name. I don’t know if it would work for a female. In any case, I still wouldn’t call a cat Bin just because of the unix reference.

  4. enetheru says:

my gf liked switch, i liked catmonster

  5. Max says:

It’s a hostile takeover. I already see all the LGP games raising in price by 10 pounds to compensate for the tons of catfood. :P

    # Quark: She loves having her ears scratched, so a Ferengi name was needed!
    # Qwerty: She is a keyboard cat. Obvious really
    # Switch: Her favourite place to sit is on the office gigabit switch. Its warm and by the window. Also a Matrix tie-in
    # UsrBin: /usr/bin/cat. OK so cat is usually in /bin but you can’t call a cat just Bin

Well, obviously “UsrBin” would be suitable due to the Unix link, but it’s just not significant enough to justify a rather crappy name compared to the other ones. :P
Qwerty… well, that’s a nice one, would be Quertz for me though. Might really be fitting the cat.
Switch… well… it just seems to pseudo-modern. You should check whether she prefers to sit on the keyboards or on the switch. :P
Well, Quark is nice and so on, but considering all those which I preselected again, I’d definitely go with “Querty”.

  6. Maxim says:

I also have a cat at home, he is snow white and deaf, but he screams for food every day at 5 a.m
I love animals and I hope you would enjoy your latest addition.

I voted for qwerty , sounds cool and never heard someone by that name.

  7. Clive says:

    dvorak :(

  8. kayman says:

I always wanted to name cat (if I will have one (but I won’t because I am allergic :( )) Jiji (if the cat is black, Jiji is cat fomr Kiki’s Delivery Service anime) or Spot :)
But I voted for Qwerty and Quark too

  9. RazZziel says:

    Awwwwwwww!

Save some Ferrari-fueling money to make her a nice bed.

  10. Vanir says:

I was thinking of Pause or Break.

Lays on the Pause / Break key forcing the affected LGP worker to pause and take a break from the PC.

Just had another thought. What about Stressball or StressFur.

  11. remigiusz says:

Some famous polish historical figure (Pilsudski) had the custom of giving generic names to his pets. So his dog was simply called “dog” and horse “horse”. For the sake of simplicity you should do the same. I guess it’s very unlikely that you will have two cat instances at the same time (scope) after all.

  12. Patrick says:

“At every opportunity she loves to sit on keyboards”

I’m afraid LGPs next game will be the most buggy game ever. :P

“she spends pretty much all of her time in the office, and is a constant disruption to work.”

That cat will cause even more delays for LGPs games. :P

I like QWERTY and UsrBin, although I’d just call her /bin/cat.

    “Have you seen slashbinslashcat?”

  13. Vanir says:

    I hope she’s not bug-ridden!

  14. kayman says:

This story reminds me my friend’s cat (his name is Murko or Muro, I am not sure now). So this cat has left them one they. They thought he is dead, killed by car or something similar. But one day, after some year, the cat returned :D
SO maybe this LGP cat is just on long journey, just stopped for a few months :)

  15. Dan says:

I’ve always been partial to the following:

Zaphod (OK the cat’s a she but it’s a great name)
    Meow-ze-dung
    Fuzzy

  16. Arnaud says:

Now I understand why it takes so long time to port a game :)

  17. liam dawe says:

Well looks like qwerty is the winner, although i like spot as it’s data’s cat from star trek TNG haha.

Now get back to posting blogs about upcoming ports ;)

  18. Wait, seriously, you’re looking for amusing names for a cat and “Five” isn’t on the list? I take away your geek card!

  19. Eric Gillespie says:

Wife (zoombuggy) and I (Viking) both like the name Qwerty. Can’t deny I like the name Switch though.

  20. I voted Piper. But would be nice if you had a “enter your name” field. hehehe
    Cute cat tho! cheers
